Innocuous?
At first glance to a viewer in Scotland this painting seems innocuous – once you realise its context you can see it as provocative and daring.
Using the female form as a social commentary on women in the Chinese Army, a Chinese artist based in Hong Kong daring to make a ‘star’ out of a female Chinese Solider is very provocative.
It is bold & beautiful, very much like the female form.
The Artist – Tsui Tunyan
Tsui Tunyan born in Shanghai in 1945. completed his education at a variety of art institutes of Shanghai and subsequently worked as a commercial designer and fine artist. In 1985 he was awarded the Gold Award at the Shanghai Art Exhibition.
In 1986, Tsui moved to Hong Kong and worked in an architectural firm, contributing to designs for local landmarks such as Pacific Place and Times Square, before becoming a full-time professional artist. He also showed his work internationally, for example in Japan, Indonesia and South Korea.
From 1987 to 1994, he worked as a senior designer at Wang Ouyang Architectural Design Office. In the 1980s and 1990s, he participated in many joint exhibitions in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. From 1987 to 1996, his works were selected for the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial many times. In recent years, he has also been active in solo exhibitions in Hong Kong.
The female figure remains a recurring and central subject matter of his works and Tsui’s work combines classical and contemporary elements and juxtaposes conflicting concepts that represent an underlying social commentary.
Value
Tsui Tinyun has sold well in auctions in Hong Kong, through Bonhams and Christies; achieving prices in excess of £20,000. Smaller paintings have also achieved around 8,000 Euros in German art auctions.
The artist is still active, despite being 79 and seems a safe bet for financial return in the future.
