Pair of Victorian bell decanters

£145.00

Handsome Pair Victorian Decanters. Lovely pair of hand cut bell decanters with original stoppers. Price is for the pair.

A mid 19th century early Victorian period decanter dating around 1850.  This shape is commonly called a Newcastle decanter, and although there was a glass making center in this region there does not appear to be conclusive evidence to link the design with the area.

The decanter body is a bell shape and moulded with heavy pillars, the style being reflected in the stopper.  The pontil is ground and polished out to the base, and the stopper has the same treatment (to the top), this is unusual for decanters and a quirk of these 'Newcastle' designs.

It is made in lead glass and is quite heavy which is usual for these decanters (there are some later light weight soda examples around too).

It holds a standard bottle of wine, and probably would have held wines rather than spirits in it's time.

These decanters do stand out due to the unusual design and make for a good and usable collection.
